Majority members voted to halt legislation that would prohibit the ban on the appliances.
As some state and local governments have begun banning gas-fueled appliances in new buildings in order to reduce emissions, the Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act and the Save Our Gas Stoves Act have been introduced in the House of Representatives. The first act would prohibit federal agencies from limiting the sale of gas stoves. The second act would prevent the further restriction of energy conservation standards for gas-fueled appliances.
Some members of the majority party, who were unhappy with the passage of the debt ceiling compromise between President Joe Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy, voted against advancing the legislation that would have protected gas stoves from government bans.
Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana changed his vote to a “no” which makes it possible to bring the bill to the floor at a later time.
